Title: Everything is lost but the ring remains
Fandom: Wheel of Time
Characters: Liandrin Guirale, Lanfear
Rating: G
Length: 200 words
Notes: Post S2, Prompt: ring
Summary: She took her son, then her ring and offered the illusion of freedom to replace them.
A treasure to cherish, a burden to carry, the ring remains on her finger, untouched. It's a familiar weight that no longer bears the same familiar comfort. For what has she left that is not now foreign to her? No son, no sisters.
The ring, once mighty symbol of her noble purpose, no longer carries any meaning but the shameful betrayal of her vows. Yet, she keeps it, punishes herself with the sight of the golden serpent, sole relic of what was lost.
It annoys Lanfear greatly, to witness the silent mourning of a life Liandrin never chose for herself. First held back by a son she had never wanted, now captive of regrets for an establishment she had always dreamed of breaking. A pity, truly. It annoys Lanfear, yet she gives it time — how bitter the irony, to despise another woman trapped in her own past.
Until the self-inflicted punishment needs to come to an end or all of it would have been for nothing. Liandrin won’t do it. It’s a gift, Lanfear tells her when she destroys it.
First her son, now her ring, it’s the illusion of a freedom Liandrin doesn’t believe she deserves that Lanfear offers.
